Living in Lake Sherwood |

![]() |
Lake Sherwood, California is about half way between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Offering green scenic beauty and clean air, Lake Sherwood is only 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Known for its wonderful Mediterranean climate, Lake Sherwood enjoys near perfect temperatures all year round. Settled snugly in the northern foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains in western Los Angeles County, the City of Lake Sherwood is nine miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and 38 miles west of downtown Los Angeles. Like the ancient oaks that enhance the community, Sherwood's deep historical and cultural roots are equally fascinating. Long before David Murdock purchased the land in 1984, Sherwood already had many historic landmarks. Lake Sherwood, originally Potrero Lake, is the oldest man-made lake in California. It was built in 1904 and is approximately 165 acres. It was changed to Lake Sherwood when the surrounding areas, used for the filming of "Robin Hood" starring Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. in 1921, became known as "Sherwood Forest" and "Maid Marian Park." |

Inside the gates of Sherwood is the "Robin Hood Cabin," a home built for the movie and it is rumored that Fairbanks lived there while filming "Robin Hood." It is a registered Ventura County Historical Landmark. Sherwood Country Club lies within the academically-acclaimed Conejo Valley Unified School District of Ventura County. Top rated Westlake Elementary, Colina Middle School, and Westlake High School service Sherwood, and have received California Distinguished School awards from the state. Shopping A shopper's paradise for Sherwood residents. Sherwood is just minutes from regional centers with major department stores, and adjacent Westlake Village provides a number of quaint shopping plazas featuring upscale shops, specialty boutiques, and everything in between. Airports Sherwood is serviced by two major airports, Los Angeles International (LAX) and Hollywood/Burbank (BUR), as well as Van Nuys, Oxnard, and Camarillo airports, which accommodate private and corporate planes. Entertainment & Dining Abundant entertainment and dining choices await the Sherwood resident. |

Culture is alive and well in the city, with the world-class Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza which houses the Performing Arts Center, including the 1,800-seat Fred Kavli Theatre of the Performing Arts and the 394-seat Janet and Ray Scherr Forum Theatre. Both theatres offer a wide variety of performances including popular entertainers, Broadway musicals, ballet, symphony, live theatre, distinguished speakers, comedy, jazz, and award-winning children's shows, and much more. The Civic Arts Plaza is a focal point in the community and is also home to City Hall and a five-acre park. This family-friendly community, often named one of the safest cities for its size in the nation, prides itself on volunteerism - its members coming together to impact society in a positive manner - to create a better world for future generations.

There is a variety of award-winning restaurants, providing gourmet and ethnic cuisine and charming ambiance, regional theaters, and movie theaters throughout the Conejo Valley. Recreation With 13,000 acres of open space and 33 developed parks around Thousand Oaks, outdoor recreation is a way of life for Sherwood residents. There are 75 miles of established trails for hiking, biking and equestrian pleasure. In addition, there are five play field parks for organized sports. Sherwood families can also enjoy activities, such as fishing, sailing, and kayaking, on the community's private Lake Sherwood, a 165-acre lake. About 3,000 years ago, Chumash Indians moved into the region and lived by hunting rabbits and other game, and gathering grains and acorns. On-going excavations, archaeological sites, and polychrome rock paintings in the area provide a glimpse into the social and economic complexity of the ancient Chumash world. In 1770, Captain Gaspar de Portola led a party of Spanish explorers and missionaries, traveling north on the route that became known as the El Camino Real.
